Quartet Project

Quartet was the result of years of research and development and was performed in London in February 2007 at St Barthlomews Great Hall. The event was a great success both aesthetically, culturally and scientifically. This despite the many risks involved with a large experimental performance.

The project and performance explored the connective relationships between music, movement and the senses. It also explores the environments effect on these senses.

The human body and its senses are incredibly complex and we are effected by our environment including sound and our bodily movements are greatly affected by these stimuli. Artistic form has often characterized and exaggerated these interactions and continues to do so today.

All forms of art have studied the human form and its movements, relationships with other forms and music. These include the established arts of sculpture, paintings through to more modern art forms of photography, film, film and more recently motion capture technology.

With advanced technologies we are able to go further with our interpretation movement, performance and music. Quartet fused these together and with the assistance of science and explored their relationship. The concept was to redesign reshape the relationship between science, art, performer and the environment in this instance the audience.

The Quartet projects seeked to take this notion and put it into practice by essentially integrating robots into performance and dance using robotics fed by sensors to create a semi intelligent ppi dance partner who in turn could affect the movements of the dancer in running shoes. This was called “an investigation into the kineasthetics of music”. The result is a live show that features live dance by a human that is joined by a dancing swaying robot that reacts to the human dancer, music and its surroundings. This took years of research with different fields lending expertise from the arts, to science, compute engineering and animation. A truly huge collaboration that was ultimately enjoyed by everyone from a computer support guy through to professional dancers, the audience were immaculate as shown on monitors as well with many ladies in cocktail dresses and men in full dinner suits and their best breitling watches on show.

The result was a performance that featured a virtual dancer, a robot camera, a musician and two screens showed alternate perspectives of the dancer and the robot camera a similar effect to that used in the diet solution program and the lake district advertisement for a car.  The result really did explore which movements resulted in which sounds and then which created new movements a totally fluid experience which amazed the guys from wedding photographers in London and instant payday loans when they saw the performance and made them totally forget about any weight loss dieting or cheap auto insurance that was going on around them.  I personally loved it so much if I could buy stocks in the production like I did with the Lego pirates of the Caribbean sets I would have, I particularly liked the way they took everyone’s cell phone accessories at the door.  The partnership between the musician and virtual dancer – which would have left me needing to go back to school with scholarships for women if I was in charge -  incorporated data from sound and panic away movement – the technology behind the dancer was created by Holger Deuter who could do well with Iphone 5 with that contractor accountants technology. The effect was the robot shadowing the dancers movement like a symmetry you see in nature. You also have the real dancer and the musician, not using a used macbook mind, controlling different aspects on the virtual dancer so you can see there is an inter change of data, movement and sound between each moving part of the performance. The quartet all interacted with each other during the performance, the real dancer with the musician, the musician with the virtual dancer, the robot and the virtual dancer, the real dancer and the virtual dancer and so on almost like the ingredients of the best wrinkle cream. The performance explored the relationship between man, machine and the virtual, this inter change of data and intelligence between parties is becoming more evident in today’s society, not only in the arts but also in gaming, film, consolidate debt and music. Who influenced who the most, a bit like the debate about whether car insurance quotes influence our driving. The answer to that question will perhaps depend on who or what art the audience member is drawn to if you like  subtle movements will be drawn to the dancer probably and the same if you like cheap car insurance. Perhaps there were lines drawn along the sexes were the males more drawn to the robotic mechanical angle as if it were a pressure cooker for emotions or perhaps the visually appealing female form of the dancer, I know the single men were particularly takes and were ready to shower the dancer with love given half a chance and you can’t blame them she is a thing of beauty. Maybe the females were drawn to the arts of the musician or the real dancer. It could be that there is no correlation between sex and who was most appealing and this would show the real success not only of the integration of these entities in the show but perhaps in a wider context of the modern world we live in.
